Hybrid tests: real AGVs drive in a virtual scenario

CHESSCON software is used at Korea's first fully automated terminal

Busan (South Korea)/Hamburg (Germany). 9 April 2024. The Busan New Port with its state-of-the-art port facilities at six terminals is a flagship project in the technology country of Korea. The last terminal and also the first fully automated terminal in Korea has now been opened. Hybrid tests for horizontal transport with AGVs were carried out in advance.

With the commissioning of the sixth and final new terminal at Busan New Port, Korea is perfectly prepared for the future of shipping trade. This is because both the container gantry cranes on the water side and the landside cranes in the yard are operated fully automatically by the Busan Port Authority. This combines Dongwon Global Terminal (DGT) with the takeover of fully automated horizontal transport with Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV). The new terminal was officially opened on 5 April 2024.

Horizontal transport was tested intensively at the new terminal in advance, although the new TOS system was not yet running in real operation. The partner companies Piscesoft and AKQUINET have jointly developed hybrid test scenarios for this purpose. Prof Dr Holger Schütt, Managing Director of AKQUINET's Port division, explains the approach: "We supplied the real AGVs with all the necessary data from the future TOS and were therefore able to run the horizontal traffic at the terminal under real conditions before commissioning, even though no ship had yet been unloaded." This was made possible by AKQUINET's CHESSCON simulation software.

Jungwoo KIM DGT (Dongwon Global Terminal Busan), Head of Management and Operation:  “DGT’s innovative approach to integrating Digital Twin environment with real AGVs to streamline the validation process is truly commendable! It’s inspiring to see how DGT(Dongwon Global terminal) tackles challenges head-on, setting new standards in efficiency and innovation within the industry.”

AKQUINET was involved in a total of three terminal projects at Busan New Port with its expertise and using its CHESSCON simulation software.
